Where does decorative rock make sense?
Decorative rock and stone last for years without topping up, don’t float away in a summer storm when they’re edged properly, and give a clean, modern look. They make the most sense in:
- narrow strips between the driveway and the house, or along side yards,
- around downspouts and A/C pads, where water and foot traffic wash mulch away,
- dry, low-water beds with drip irrigation,
- and as an accent: a dry creek bed, a border band, or around boulders.
What are the trade-offs?
UF/IFAS’s mulch guidance is direct about it: rocks, gravel and shells don’t prevent weeds or create balanced soil temperatures the way organic mulch does. Stone holds and reflects heat, so plants in a rock bed against a sunny wall run hotter and may need more water. Organic mulch, by contrast, feeds the soil as it breaks down. For beds full of shrubs and flowers, mulch is usually the better choice; rock is best where plants are few or water and traffic are the problem.
Which rock?
- River rock: smooth, rounded, in several sizes and colors; good for drainage areas and dry creek beds.
- Lava rock: light, porous, red or black; stays put well on slopes.
- Crushed stone and gravel: a crisp, modern look for strips and paths.
- Boulders and accent stones: focal points, edging and steps.
If your HOA has a list of approved colors or materials, we match it.
How is a rock bed installed?
The base matters more than the stone. We clear weeds and old mulch, grade the bed so water drains away from the house, lay landscape fabric, set an edging that keeps rock out of the lawn and the mower, then spread the stone at an even depth. Around existing plants we leave room at the base. Before digging edging trenches, the job is called in to Sunshine 811 as Florida law requires.
Keeping rock beds clean
Leaves and grass clippings that settle into rock break down and become soil where weeds sprout. Blowing the beds clean during lawn maintenance visits keeps rock looking new.
Rock with pavers and design work
Rock is often part of a bigger change, like a new paver walkway or a front-yard redesign. We install rock beds in ChampionsGate, Four Corners, Celebration, Davenport and Clermont.

Common questions
Questions about decorative rock & stone
Should I use rock or mulch in my beds?
Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down and keeps roots cooler; rock doesn’t, and it holds heat in a Florida summer. Rock suits drainage strips, pathways and spots where you want a clean, fixed look. Many yards use both.
Is rock better than mulch?
It depends on the spot. Rock lasts longer and handles runoff and traffic. Organic mulch, per UF/IFAS, does a better job of controlling weeds, keeping soil temperature even and improving the soil. Planted beds usually do better with mulch.
Do you put fabric under the rock?
Yes, under rock beds we lay landscape fabric to keep the stone from sinking into the sand. Debris that settles on top can still sprout weeds, so the beds need occasional blowing out.
Will my HOA allow decorative rock?
Many associations allow it with approved colors or in certain areas only. Check your guidelines or ask the management company; we install to whatever they specify.
How is decorative rock priced?
By the area and depth (which sets how much stone), the type of rock, the edging, and how much prep comes first. We measure and give you a written price.
