When should a palm be removed?
Palms are worth keeping when they’re healthy, but removal is the right call when a palm is:
- dead, with no green fronds left,
- leaning badly or damaged after a storm,
- planted too close to the house, the pool cage or the screen enclosure, where fronds and fruit keep causing damage,
- declining in a way that can’t be fixed, or in the way of a new project.
Can a dying palm be saved?
Sometimes. Yellowing lower fronds are often a sign of a nutrient deficiency rather than a dying palm, and UF/IFAS recommends leaving those fronds on rather than cutting them. We’ll tell you honestly which you’re looking at before we quote a removal.
How is a palm removed?
Small palms can come down in one piece. Tall palms near a house are taken down in sections, crown first, then the trunk in pieces lowered to the ground. Afterward we remove the fronds, trunk and debris.
What about the root ball?
You can leave the base flush with the ground, or have it ground out or dug so the spot can be replanted or sodded. Any digging or grinding is called in to Sunshine 811 first; Florida law requires notice at least two full business days ahead.
Replacing a palm
If you want something in its place, think about the spot first: a palm crowding a pool cage might be better replaced by a smaller palm or a shrub that won’t reach the screen. That decision is part of plants and shrubs or landscape design.
Permits and HOAs
Rules for removing palms vary by city, county and HOA. Check before removing, and see our tree removal page for how Florida’s risk-tree law (s. 163.045, F.S.) works. We remove palms in Celebration, ChampionsGate, Davenport, Four Corners and Clermont. For healthy palms that just need cleanup, see palm tree trimming.

Common questions
Questions about palm tree removal
What decides the price of a tree or palm removal?
Height and trunk size, what is under and around the tree (roof, screen cage, pool, power lines), how close we can get a truck, and whether you want the stump ground. Send photos with your quote request and we can narrow it down before the visit.
Do you use climbing spikes on palms?
No. UF/IFAS says spikes leave wounds on a palm that never heal. We work from ladders or lifts and keep tools clean between palms to avoid spreading disease.
How can I tell if my palm is dead?
A palm with no green fronds left is usually past saving. Yellowing lower fronds, on the other hand, are often a nutrient problem, according to UF/IFAS. Send us a photo and we’ll take a look.
Do you remove the root ball?
It is an option. You can leave the base flush, or have it ground or dug out so the spot can be replanted or sodded. Your quote says which.
Can you remove a palm inside a pool cage?
Usually, yes, by taking it down in small sections and carrying pieces out. Access through the cage door and protecting the screen and deck are part of the plan and the price.
How much does palm removal cost?
It depends on the height and species, what’s around it (roof, pool cage, fence), access, and whether the root ball comes out. We give you a written price after looking.
